Description:
These minutes summarize the statements of the First Secretaries of the Communist Parties participating at the August 1971 Crimea meeting of Warsaw Pact party leaders. Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev reports on the internal situation in the Soviet Union as well as recent developments in the foreign arena, inter alia the development of detente in Europe, the recent US opening to China and independent actions by the Romanians and Yugoslavs. Brezhnev also ponders on the situation in the Middle East. With respect to the UAR, he describes Soviet attempts to persuade Sadat to keep the peace. Furthermore, he analyzes recent Communist defeats in the Sudan.
The subsequent discussions of the leaders cover the renewed idea for a Balkan pact, the status of treaty negotiations with the FRG and suitable strategies to roll back Chinese influence. Collection: Crimea Meetings
