Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual AssistanceThe Warsaw Treaty14 May 1955 |
Description:
This treaty, signed by the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia, was officially named the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance and became known as the Warsaw Treaty of 1955. The document specifies the validity of the treaty for 20 years and provides for the establishment of a Political Consultative Committee (PCC) for the purpose of consultations among the member parties, and a joint command of the armed forces. Unlike its Western counterpart NATO, the Warsaw Treaty does not provide unequivocal security guarantees to its members, nor an automatic commitment to their collective defense.
