This document summarizes the results of a West German government assessment of the importance of the East German National People's Army (Nationale Volksarmee, NVA) within the Warsaw Pact (WP). It was prepared by the East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi) intelligence agency. The report exposes the extent to which East Germany depends on the Soviet Union with respect to security and military. The structure and capabilities of the NVA are assessed and the crucial importance of East Germany in WP planning is shown. Annexed is a letter from the East German deputy defense minister commenting on the document.
