Memorandum of Conversation between East German Minister for Disarmament and Defense (Rainer Eppelmann) and Soviet Defense Minister (Dimitri Iazov)29 Apr 1990 |
||
Description:
This memorandum addresses a conversation between East German Minister for Disarmament and Defense Rainer Eppelmann and Soviet Defense Minister Dimitry Iazov in April 1990. Eppelmann sees Germany as a bridge between the Warsaw Pact (WP) and NATO. He expects Soviet forces to remain in East Germany with West German financial support. Iazov remarks that maintaining two German armies in a united Germany is unrealistic. He opposes the idea proposed by Soviet Defense Minister Eduard Shevardnadze that a united Germany should be a member of both NATO and the WP. Iazov assumes that German unification will take at least five years.
