Description:
This East German report describes NATO military exercises and maneuvers in the fall of 1988. A number of NATO exercises overlapped from August through November, the most important of which were "Autumn Forge 88", "Able Archer 88", and training for reinforcement of NATO forces in Europe ("Reforger 88" and "Crested Cap 88"). In the period from 6-23 September 1988, the number of concentrated NATO forces reached a total of 385,000 troops, 2,600 battle tanks, and 1,160 rotary-wing aircraft. The report regards these maneuvers as proof that the Western alliance still poses a serious security threat and could spring a surprise attack on the Warsaw Pact. According to the authors, NATO's military exercises show that the West is still pursuing a strategy of flexible response and is not contributing to the process of disarmament.
