Description:
This document examines the main findings of a NATO assessment of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) long-term economic development trends. It was prepared by the East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi) intelligence agency. With respect to the non-Soviet Warsaw Pact countries, the authors identify a slight phase of economic recovery that will not, however, resolve the structural problems. The Soviet Union could achieve positive results that might give it some breathing space, but military spending is a heavy burden. Nevertheless, the Soviet economy is assessed as being strong enough to support a variety of political initiatives and decisions.
