||
Description:
In this report, Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti provides information on Italy's involvement in the stay-behind networks of Western Europe during the Cold War. He outlines the structure of the Italian secret army codenamed Gladio that was run by the Italian military intelligence service (Servizio di Informazioni delle Forze Armate, SIFAR). Andreotti makes reference to the arms storage system in Italy, to which the US contributed, to the principal activities of Gladio in peacetime, and to the recruitment of civil personnel for clandestine operations. Andreotti concludes that in light of the changes in Eastern Europe since the end of the Cold War, the Italian defense system should be revised.
