CIA Information ReportSubject: Zhukov's Comments on Soviet Military Capabilities30 Apr 1957 |
||
Description:
This CIA report on Marshall Zhukov's speech in East Berlin in March 1957 evaluates the source - an Asian journalist - as unreliable and declares that the information presented is a propaganda version of Zhukov's speech, fabricated by the KGB for a target audience in developing countries, especially in Asia and Africa. The discrepancies apparent from this version are: (i) the existing capabilities of the Soviet forces to reach the English Channel within two days almost without battle, (ii) the claims that black American soldiers and a significant number of French soldiers are Soviet sympathizers and would not fight against the USSR, (iii) the statement that all ground forces will soon be armed with the latest nuclear weapons, (iv) the position of extended deterrence on the Soviet part, namely, that the Soviet side will launch a counterattack rather than be the first to strike, and (v) the emphasis on close cooperation between the Soviet and East German armies.
