This document presents a NATO assessment of the situation and policy of the Soviet Union and other Socialist countries in Europe. It was prepared by the East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi) intelligence agency. The document mainly addresses the state of emergency in Poland and repercussions of this development. It is estimated that the Polish military is in control of the situation. Another focus of the paper is on the economic condition in the Socialist countries. The paper closes with a discussion of the domestic political situation in the Soviet Union and of a few foreign-policy problems.
