NATO Assessment of Military Forces and Strength of USSR and Warsaw Pact16 Oct 1989 |
||
Description:
This document summarizes NATO assessments of the military policy and military might of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact (WP) allies. It was prepared by the East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi) intelligence agency. The changes in Soviet policy since Gorbachev took office are critically assessed. NATO does not expect a radical change towards liberalization and democratization in the Soviet Union. NATO acknowledges the now defensive nature of the WP military doctrine, yet does not expect disarmament to change the strategic situation.
