West German Experts Assess Soviet Capabilities to Locate and Fight Pershing II Missiles on West German Territory14 Sep 1983 |
||
Description:
This document presents an assessment by West German specialists of the chances of Soviet forces to locate and intercept Pershing II missiles fired from the FRG. It was prepared by the East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi) intelligence agency. It argues that only the installation of a satellite-based early warning system can identify Pershing II missiles with sufficient accuracy and swiftness to allow their destruction while airborne, and discusses the technical properties of such a system. The experts believe that there are currently no missile defense systems with these qualities, so that incoming Pershing II missiles cannot be intercepted.
