Memorandum on Hungary's Security Policy Situation7 Mar 1989 |
||
Description:
This document analyzes the situation of Hungary's national security in the late 1980s and the state and future maintenance of its army. Due to military détente and favorable developments in international relations, Hungary can maintain a defensive military doctrine while relying on bilateral military cooperation with the Soviet Union. On the one hand, the possibility of unilateral arms reductions is examined, while on the other, plans are made for the development and modernization of the army. The document concludes that Hungary's future economic development will not allow it to maintain its army's size and structure at the level required for modern warfare.
